In Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) of Tajikistan the collapse of the Soviet Union was a shock to the people because it was almost impossible to imagine becoming self-sustained again and surviving the crises in all sectors. The energy sector was not an exception. The lack of external energy supply forced local people to rely on scarce biomass resources, such as firewood and dung. In this paper we aim to quantify the firewood consumption in Ishkashim district of GBAO. We also analyze the factors which influence firewood consumption. For this purpose, eight villages have been selected, where data have been collected through interviews in 170 households. The results show that on average, households consumed 5,329 megajoule (MJ) of energy from firewood per winter month in winter 2011/12. Firewood consumption in the villages is positively influenced by altitude, size of the private garden, hours of heating in winter, whereas it was negatively influenced by the education level and source of electricity.
