Steven Higgins started as Chair of Plant Ecology at the University of Bayreuth in 2017. Before that he was Professor of Botany at the University of Otago (2013-2017) and Professor in Physical Geography at the Johann-Wolfgang Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main (2007 to 2013). Higgins completed a BSc in Botany and Zoology (1991) and a BSc Honours in Botany (1992) at the University of the Witwatersrand and obtained a PhD in Botany (1998) from the University of Cape Town.

Steven Higgins researches the processes that influence the distribution and dynamics of plants and the role that plants play in the Earth system. His research aims to develop capacities to predict future states of the terrestrial land-surface. Themes include: process based species distribution modelling, dynamic vegetation modelling, "detection and attribution" of ecological change, biome shifts, ecophysiology of drought stress, savanna ecosystems.
