Emergent properties of plant community productivity and vegetation dynamics are driven by climate, soil and biotic interactions. With a growing interest in coordinated, globally distributed experiments, we search a common metric in community ecology for cross-site comparison. Here, we present design of the living metric and first field data from an altitudianal gradient in Europe.
