Abstract:
Attempts to couple atmospheric models with soil and biosphere experiments fail due to a scale problem, except at short time periods and small spatial scales. This is because the scales in soil and biosphere experiments are significantly smaller in space and larger in time as compared to atmospheric models. Upscaling from the soil and the biosphere is often conducted with assumptions regarding the atmosphere, which are based on climatological approximations. On the other hand, atmospheric models need effective soil and plant parameters which are generally not available for grid elements in large scale models. The absence of satisfactory solutions is also due to an inability to create an integrative group of scientists spanning all relevant disciplines. The paper discusses this issue on the basis of several examples mainly for forest ecosystems.
