How does water flow in soil and plants? When does the soil become the limiting factor for root water uptake? There are experimental and theoretical evidences that soil physics becomes the limiting factor for root water uptake when the soil is drying and the transpiration demand is high. This opens unexplored avenues in the (re)search of drought tolerant plants.
