Citizen Science, the voluntary engagement in research, has both a long tradition in biodiversity research and is experiencing a revival with modern technologies becoming available. In my talk I will discuss how citizen science can provide innovation to scientific endeavours and enhanced relevance for research for society and policy, using case studies across Europe. Overall, I ask how - by design – citizen science programmes can be fostered to provide useful biodiversity research output.
