Drivers of net inorganic CO₂ fluxes from High Arctic rivers: The roles of erosion, thaw, and rainfall

Vortragender: Dr. Emily Stevenson, Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam (Homepage)
Do. 12.11.2026

Rapid Arctic warming and permafrost thaw are exposing previously frozen minerals and sediments to chemical weathering, with important implications for river chemistry
and the global carbon cycle. In this talk, I use sulfur and oxygen isotopes together with multi-decadal river chemistry records from northeast Greenland to investigate how
weathering processes have changed over time and react strongly to erosion and extreme rainfall events. Particular attention is given to sulfide oxidation and its interaction with
carbonate minerals, revealing how hydrological changes in permafrost landscapes can
alter river chemistry and potentially influence atmospheric CO₂ fluxes.
