Designing Large-Scale Hydrologic Research in the United States

Formed as a non-profit corporation in 2001, the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) exists to develop a community research and education agenda, to acquire the resources to execute that agenda, and to promote programs of education, outreach and technology transfer. The goal of CUAHSI is to enable scientists to perform research that is beyond the scope that any one investigator or even small teams of investigators can manage. CUAHSI is modeled on research consortia that have long provided support for fields such as oceanography, seismology, and astronomy.
HydroView, the initial infrastructure program currently being designed by CUAHSI, consists of four elements:
  • A network of hydrologic observatories to collect coherent, multidisciplinary data sets, over a wide range of space and time scales in river basins at the 10,000 km2 scale;
  • A hydrologic information system to store, process, visualize and analyze complex data sets, including data collected by the hydrologic observatories as well as data collected by government agencies. This activity will provide a common data model for all hydrologic observatories and other hydrologic activities;
  • A hydrologic measurement technology facility to bring cutting edge technology to the hydrologic observatories and to the broader community; and
  • A hydrologic synthesis center that will foster synthetic, collaborative, cross-disciplinary studies, including cross-observatory studies.
The presentation will discuss the design strategies behind each of these elements and report on the present status of these efforts. Opportunities for international collaboration will be highlighted.
