Global forests and their diverse appearance have long held a great fascination. In times of global change, forests are also caught between competing land uses, the need for carbon storage, as well as forest disturbances and climate-driven range shifts of tree species. The increasing availability of forest data and novel quantitative tools now make it possible to address longstanding, unanswered questions and current problems in forest ecology. This includes explaining observed patterns in species composition, diversity, and geographic distribution through processes such as environmental effects and biotic interactions in space and time, as well as projecting the state of future forests under new climatic conditions. In this lecture, I will use examples from European and global forests to show how the link between processes and patterns in forests can be investigated by analyzing and simulating tree demography.
