Sustainability on Campus: Actions at the University of Ferrara

A short review of the most relevant advancements in the Culture of Responsibility are discussed starting with the Responsibility Principle of Hans Jonas, the“ Risk Society” concept of Ulrich Beck and the related Precautionary Principle, and, most recently, the transition from Consumerism to Sustainability. The relevance in all these aspects of Ethics is underlined. The roots of these concepts in the Greek-Jewish-Christian and the Humanistic tradition are recalled; what is firmly established and what is new is singled out.

The Sustainability concept is discussed and its key role in the present University Educational system and practical campus life is addressed. What it is under development at the University of Ferrara - a policy statement, specific Campus and Faculty actions, PhD research projects etc. – is shortly presented.
