Atmospheric Energy: A Keystone of Microbial Life and Productivity in Subterranean Environments

ABSTRACT Soil bacterial communities play a pivotal role in ecosystem function, they drive global carbon and nutrient cycles and influence climate regulation. While most soil bacteria get their energy from organic matter derived from photosynthesis, a significant number also utilize various inorganic compounds and atmospheric trace gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. In this seminar, I will present my research on the energy dynamics driving microbial biodiversity and primary production in cave ecosystems and discuss the broader implications for soil biodiversity and our planet's climate.
