Abstract:
The knowledge of mobility and vagility of insect species is important for ecological and biogeographical research and nature conservation. Aquatic insects disperse or change the waters normally by active flight. Based on own and literature data the flight ability of adephagan water beetles with distribution in Germany is analysed and compared with their respective habitat preferences. Stable habitats (e. g. fens and running waters) show significantly more species unable to fly than unstable habitats where mobile species dominate. The index of the relative area of the hind wings to determine flightlessness is reviewed and the existing system for the Colymbetinae, Agabinae and Dytiscinae is enlarged for the smaller-sized subfamily Hydroporinae. The relative areas of the hind wings of the Hydroporinae differ from the remaining Dytiscidae.
