... the U.S. National Science Foundation Centers for Transformative Environmental Monitoring Programs (CTEMPs) and the Finland Geological Survey. We offered a 5-day long hands-on workshop on the theory, application and analysis of fiber-optic sensing for earth and atmospheric sciences. The workshop accommodated a wide range of participants, from those interested in an introduction to the methods, to those wanting to learn state-of-the-art data processing for getting the greatest possible precision. Both Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) was addressed in theory and practice. Examples were discussed ranging from observing ice temperatures at the Ross Ice Sheet, water temperatures at the Dead Sea, atmospheric turbulence in Germany, deep rock installations in Nevada, and other geophysical properties around the world. All participants had the opportunity to work directly with DTS instruments and cables designed specifically for environmental sensing, with a full day of hands-on installation and operations, and a full day of data analysis. DTS and DAS manufacturers (Athena Chalari of Silixa) and instructors (Christoph Thomas, John Selker, Karl Lapo, Lena Pfister) lectured and were available for consultation.
